Young in Prison South Africa has its beginnings in 2002, when a Dutch national started the Young in Prison Foundation after serving as an intern at Pollsmoor Correctional Centre. Initially, Young in Prison Foundation implemented its vision through local partners in South Africa, Columbia, Surinam and Malawi – with Young in Prison Netherlands as the lead organisation.
In 2012, Young in Prison Foundation changed its model and established itself as a network of organizations, with members in Africa, Europe and South America. The current members of the Young in Prison Network include:
- Young in Prison South Africa
- Music Crossroads Malawi
- YADEN Kenya
- Young in Prison Netherlands
Each of these organisations functions as independent organisations in their respective countries, with Young in Prison Netherlands functioning as the secretariat of the network and coordinating the flow of information and sharing of learning across the network.
